Toy Review – Furby Boom Great Toys for Christmas: Pretty much anyone who has lived in the 2000s is familiar with Furby; a small, egg shaped somewhat quirky robotic toy from Tiger Electronics (Parent Company, Hasbro) that became a huge fad at the turn of the century. Furbies were popular with kids as one of the first real robotic toys, and served as a “surrogate pet” for kids who didn’t have a dog or cat. Sadly, their loud noises and “bubbly” Furby personalities won them a reputation among parents as an irritating toy to be avoided, and the Furby fad died out. However, while most remember Furbies in their first incarnation, they have actually undergone a couple of updates over the years, having resurfaced twice now prior to 2013, which brings us the third incarnation of these little guys: The Furby Boom. Furby Boom is the newest and most advanced form of the Furby ever made. Thankfully, this incarnation retains none of the annoyance of the first generation, and has many more personalities to boot. The Boom is far more “animal” like than previous incarnations of the Furby, with mechanical motions in the shape itself, allowing it to do things like bob [...]

Got Homework Headaches? Are you embroiled in a daily battle over your children’s homework? It is frustrating for everyone, particularly if the homework load is too heavy or your children are having trouble understanding it. Even more complicated is when they lie about their homework, saying they have less than they really have, or that they don’t have any when they really do. Sometimes they will even tell you they are all done when they have really been playing video games or listening to music in their rooms all evening. How should you respond? Unfortunately, there is no magic bullet or quick fix. But we have four pointers to stop homework headaches in their tracks. 1. Motivation Can you still remember when you didn’t like to do homework? Chances are you did not understand the importance of doing homework, or the implications of not getting it done. Most kids find homework a burden that keeps them from doing the fun things they would rather be doing. Lecturing them will probably make matters worse. Recognizing this is the first step. Ideally, these tips will help you inspire them to take their homework seriously. 2. Let them select the time Every child is [...]

Toy Review – Tipster by WowWee New Toys for Christmas 2014: Tipster is the first robot produced by WowWee that is targeting the pre-K crowd. Stated to be for ages 4 and up, Tipster can It has the ability to tip, move around, spin and balance using some of the included Tipster ladders and character pieces. Who Is This For? Robot toy collectors will likely want to include the Tipster in their collections. Parents are now realizing that toy robots can play a part in a child’s development and growth, which will make the Tipster robot an attractive Christmas gift idea for parents of preschoolers, as well as children of elementary age. Age 4 years and older Things We Like Robots have been all about fighting for many years, and many parents have been reluctant to buy a “violent” toy for a young child. But public perception of toy robots is changing because of the introduction of educational robots. WowWee started the non-violent robot trend by developing robots such as Robo-Me and the MiP line of balancing robots. Tipster is also a balancing robot, but it was designed to attract a younger audience. Tipster character pieces and ladders help kids experiment with weights and balances, which in turn help develop the child’s motor shills. Brightly colored and with a winsome [...]

Play Halloween Party Games At Your Home: Everyone loves to dress up for Halloween, but safety concerns in recent years have changed the way Halloween is celebrated. More and more families are choosing to have a Halloween party at home to celebrate. But which Halloween party games will your children want to play? Frankly, there are very few Halloween party games that are not actually adaptations of other generic party games that have been changed slightly for Halloween use. Halloween Charades Halloween Charades is a great game that can be played with as few as two teams of two children each. One child tries to get the others to guess a word or phrase. They are allowed to use gestures or oral clues as long as they do not include the target word or phrase. This game can also be played in larger groups, where each player guesses in turn. When their turn comes, they pull a piece of paper out of a basket or other container that has the name of a Halloween character, or some other Halloween topic written on it. A more challenging version is timed, in which each player has one minute to successfully get the group to guess the Halloween topic you selected. Pass the Orange or Apple Pass [...]

Toy Review – WikiBear New Toys for Christmas 2014: Most people can probably think back to their childhood and remember a toy; a stuffed animal, action figure, or doll, that they used to talk to and carry around as a kind of surrogate best friend. In the same vein as the imaginary friend, Teddy Bears and other stuffed animals hold a special place in our hearts, and add a bit of companionship to young children that helps them through their earliest years. However, in the past, it was a bit…problematic, if your child were to suddenly tell you that their bear had started talking. Not anymore! Meet WikiBear, a smart teddy bear that connects to the internet via a bluetooth connection to your favorite smart device via a free app. Talk to WikiBear, WikiBear responds. Ask WikiBear a question, WikiBear searches the app’s internal database for a response, and if it fails to find one, proceeds to search the internet (Namely Wikipedia, hence the name, but it can find other things as well) for an appropriate answer. It can also crack jokes, give you practical information like the weather forecast, and remember some forms of information you give it to form a “relationship” with you. [...]
